100-year-old House Gets a Major Modern Upgrade with a Home Remodel in Mission Hills

This 100-year-old Mission Hills home had seen better days. Years of deferred maintenance left their mark—a sagging roof, outdated plumbing, and drainage problems plagued the property. The kitchen was closed off and dark, while the bedroom layout was awkward, featuring one oversized room and one much too small, sharing a single bathroom. The homeowners envisioned a space that accommodated their busy family of five with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a spacious, open kitchen that welcomed light and interaction.

To bring this aged house into the 21st century, we decided on a whole home remodel, merging the old with the new while preserving its existing charm.

The homeowners were living in Mexico City, hoping to hire an organized and communicative general contractor to bring their dream home to life as they stood on the verge of a new beginning—moving to the beautiful city of San Diego. We provided a detailed home remodeling design and construction plan and escorted them to the slab yard and sample studios to help them visualize their future home and select samples. We even helped the homeowner in and out of various soaking tubs to make sure the final selection didn’t just look good but felt good!

Remodeling construction began by opening up the kitchen, replacing the dated finishes and appliances with sleek, modern design features that flowed effortlessly into the rest of the home. We vaulted the living room ceiling and added new beams to accentuate the new architecture while giving the space an airy, expansive feel. The original oak floors were restored to their former glory, blending the home’s vintage charm with a fresh, contemporary aesthetic.

The primary bathroom remodel became the crown jewel of the project. Large, original windows were transformed into a stunning design feature by framing mirrors inside custom-welded wrought iron, allowing natural light to filter through and backlight the mirrors for a striking, one-of-a-kind effect. Black and white finishes added a timeless contrast, with black Schluter framing white subway tile for a touch of luxury and elegance. A sizable walk-in shower and a stunning soaking tub complete this chic getaway.

The family, initially anxious about being far away from the project, couldn’t have been happier with the end result. Now living in a space that’s just as vibrant as they are, these new San Diego residents have a home that’s completely modernized while retaining the cottage-like charm that initially attracted them. What was once tired and neglected is now prepared to bring joy to a family for years to come.
